Foggy Valleys

This image from the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) shows early morning fogs and mists in the Valles Marineris canyon system. It is something of a surprise to learn that fogs are frequently encountered in canyons and craters on Mars, particularly as the sun rises. Probably water sublimes from the surface and condenses when temperatures and pressures allow. Fogs usually clear well before midday. Click on the picture for a link to an Astronomy Picture of the Day page with a thorough discussion of the phenomenon.
