Utopia Pits |
Utopia is a largely flat region that may once have been the bed of a vanished sea... The pits seen below are representative of thousands of similar pits that appear on the surface of Utopia. They are some 10-30 meters deep and up to a kilometer in diameter. They have very sharp edges and no obvious signs of erosion. There are no impact craters associated with them. Could these pits be caused by rising columns of "warm" ice from the interior? If warm volatile material reached the surface here, wouldn't it quickly (but not necessarily explosively) siblime? Could there be other processes which cause these formations? |
